Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?

An AC that runs but blows warm or barely-cool air is the most common summer service call. The causes range from a $12 capacitor to a compressor replacement — but the diagnostic order matters. Work through this guide in sequence and you'll rule out the cheap fixes before touching the expensive ones.

Start With the Simple Checks

Before pulling out your manifold gauges, spend two minutes on the obvious stuff. These checks eliminate the most common homeowner-caused issues:

    Thermostat settings
    Confirm it's set to COOL, fan to AUTO, and the setpoint is actually below the current room temperature. A thermostat set to HEAT or FAN ON (which runs the fan without the compressor) is a real service call you don't want to bill for.

    Air filter
    A heavily restricted filter reduces airflow, causes the evaporator coil to ice over, and results in warm air from the vents. Check it before anything else. Replace if dirty.

    Circuit breakers
    The outdoor unit has its own circuit breaker at the electrical panel and usually a disconnect box at the unit itself. It's common for the outdoor breaker to trip while the indoor air handler keeps running — warm air, indoor fan running, outdoor unit dead. Reset and note if it trips again.

    Is the outdoor unit actually running?
    If the outdoor unit is completely silent, you have an electrical problem: tripped breaker, blown fuse at disconnect, failed contactor, or failed capacitor. This is different from a refrigerant problem.

Capacitor Failure — The #1 Cause

If you learn one thing from this guide: capacitors fail constantly, they're cheap to replace, and they cause exactly this symptom — AC runs (or tries to run) but doesn't cool.

Run capacitors help the compressor and condenser fan motor start and maintain running torque. When they fail, the compressor or fan won't start properly. You'll often hear a hum from the outdoor unit (the motor trying and failing to start) before the thermal overload trips and everything shuts off.

Test with a capacitor tester — not a standard multimeter. Compare your reading to the nameplate value. Tolerance is ±6%: a 45 µF capacitor reading below 42.3 µF has failed. Dual-run capacitors have two ratings (e.g., 45/5 µF for compressor/fan) — test both.

💡 Tip: Keep a selection of common dual-run capacitor values on your truck (35/5, 40/5, 45/5, 50/5 µF — 370V or 440V). You'll use them constantly through summer.
⚠️ Warning: Always discharge a capacitor before touching its terminals. Use a resistor (10kΩ, 5W) or a dedicated capacitor discharge tool. A charged 45 µF capacitor at 400V can deliver a serious shock.

Low Refrigerant

If the outdoor unit is running but air is only slightly warm — not ice cold — refrigerant is a likely suspect. Low charge is different from a dead capacitor: the system runs, the compressor runs, but cooling capacity is reduced.

Connect your gauges. For R-410A in typical summer conditions, expect 115–130 PSI on the low side and 350–420 PSI on the high side. Low suction (below 90 PSI), high superheat (above 20°F), and low subcooling (below 5°F) together confirm undercharge.

Important: low refrigerant always means there's a leak somewhere. Refrigerant doesn't disappear — it escapes. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary fix. Find the leak, repair it, then recharge to nameplate spec.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen evaporator coil will blow warm or room-temperature air because the ice is blocking heat transfer and airflow. The system is running but doing nothing useful.

Signs: you can feel that barely-cool air from the vents, and there may be ice visible on the copper refrigerant line coming out of the air handler. Open the air handler panel and inspect the coil.

Immediate fix: shut off the compressor (set thermostat to OFF or FAN ONLY), let the coil thaw. This takes 1–2 hours. Running the indoor fan speeds it up.

Root cause: dirty filter (most common), dirty evaporator coil, low refrigerant, or low airflow from a failing blower motor. Address the root cause before running cooling again or it will freeze again within hours.

⚠️ Warning: Never try to chip or chip ice off an evaporator coil — the aluminum fins and copper tubes are easily damaged. Let it thaw naturally.

Dirty Condenser Coil

The condenser coil (outdoor unit) rejects heat from the refrigerant into the outdoor air. When it's coated with dirt, cottonwood, grass clippings, or debris, it can't reject heat efficiently. The result: high head pressure, reduced capacity, and warm air.

Discharge pressure will be elevated — R-410A above 420–440 PSI in normal ambient temperatures is a sign. Subcooling will be higher than normal.

Clean the coil from the inside out: remove the top fan grill, and spray with a coil cleaner (foaming type is easiest). Rinse with low-pressure water from the inside out. Never use a pressure washer — it will flatten the fins.

Cottonwood season in BC (late May to June) can clog a condenser coil in a few days in the wrong location. Schedule condenser cleaning as a spring maintenance item.

Failed Contactor

The contactor is the high-voltage relay that switches power to the compressor and condenser fan when the thermostat calls for cooling. Contacts burn and pit over time, especially in dusty environments.

Signs of a failed contactor: outdoor unit doesn't start with a call for cooling, or contacts are welded shut (unit runs continuously without stopping). Visually inspect the contact faces for pitting, arcing, or carbon buildup.

Test: with the thermostat calling for cooling, measure 24V at the contactor coil terminals. If 24V is present and the contactor isn't pulling in, replace it. If no 24V, the problem is in the low-voltage control circuit (thermostat, wiring, or control board).

💡 Tip: Contactors are a $20–60 part and a 15-minute replacement. Stock a few common sizes. They fail far more often than people expect.

Compressor Failure

Compressor failure is the worst-case scenario and usually the last diagnosis after everything else has been ruled out. A compressor replacement on a residential system often costs as much as a new outdoor unit — so confirm before condemning.

Check first: capacitor (rule it out), contactor (rule it out), refrigerant charge (rule it out). Then measure compressor amp draw against the nameplate RLA (rated load amps). A compressor drawing LRA (locked rotor amps) continuously and tripping the breaker has a mechanical failure.

Test windings with a multimeter: measure resistance between each terminal pair (C-S, C-R, S-R). The sum of two smaller readings should equal the larger one. Any reading of zero (short) or infinity (open winding) means compressor replacement.

Also test from each terminal to ground — should be infinity. Continuity to ground means the winding insulation has broken down.
